Be Ready To Bust A Move
For two-and-a-half year old Sophie, spontaneous twirling, gyrating, and specific “fly girl” moves can happen at any moment. With or without music, any open space is an invitation to “bust a move.” You can see the joy in her movement, it’s beautiful to watch. Being a grandmother is the best job there is. Children connect [...]
Fitness For Teens
Born in the early to mid nineties, on this planet a decade plus a few years—our future—teenagers. As adults, it’s hard to get our heads around how different the world is now, than “back in the day.” I walked to and from school. Not the proverbial “ten miles in 6 feet of snow”, but I [...]
The Power of Exercise
If you took all of my clients over the past ten years–whether from group classes at the gym, or my Mind & Body Sculpting class at the Community Center, personal training clients, or beloved Wellness Boot Campers–polled them all and asked the reasons they exercise, approximately 85% of these lovely individuals would list “weight loss” [...]
Germs In The Gym
Nippy, rainy winter weather–this the time we move our workouts indoors. So there you are, doing the right thing, at the gym—training hard, working the circuit, sweating, and suddenly you wonder about the germs, bacteria, and ewe—who-knows-what that may be lurking on the surface of the very equipment that is supposed to help keep you [...]
The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
For many of us “the most wonderful time of the year” is not the holidays–it’s September. The kids are back in school, schedules normalize, and before you know it we have a routine. It feels great to get back on track–hooray for routine! Your body loves the calming effect it provides. So while you are [...]
Take A Stand
I was front and center at a Stevie Wonder concert a few nights ago when I joined the entire audience as we rose to our feet in a standing ovation. Inadvertently, hundreds of us went from sitting to standing in unison. Later, we sat, we stood up again (it was a great show), we sat [...]
Pump It Up
Tom was the local hearth throb. He never missed a workout. He spent hours at the gym (where I was working my way through college) lifting weights for his upper body, mostly his biceps. His legs were thin but he said the “curls were for the girls.” He never wanted help, said he “had it [...]
Go For The Gold
One photo can create an icon. That’s all it took for Dara Torres and her 41-year-old abs of steel. She appears beautiful and calm with a “shredded 8 pack.” One look at Robert Maxwell’s photo of her in New York Times Magazine and you can see, not only is she an amazing athlete, but years [...]

Feel Like Dancing?
We were sitting around at a family reunion in the old town hall when two little nieces about four and six years old burst into a dance. With no music playing, there was twirling, free styling and assorted “fly girl” moves. It was unplanned; they just felt it and went with it as if the open space of the gymnasium floor had called to them. With laughter between his words my dad said, “wouldn’t it be great to feel that good-so good you just wanted to dance!” I wondered why some of us grownups don’t feel that way.
Just Show Up
We’re rounding the corner on the summer of ’07. In a matter of days, Foothill Boulevard will be hopping again as school starts and the days get more structured for both parents and children. This is good news for your body-it loves routine. A regular bedtime and waking time can solve a myriad of health problems. You have an inborn desire to be in sync with the earth’s cycles. Just as the sun comes up and goes down each day, your body’s needs should be met with regularity. Take advantage of the structure that autumn brings and do your body a favor. Commit to a regular exercise routine.
